God is seeking men and women whom He can entrust greatness to in His kingdom. Man's standard for greatness is different from God's standard. Also while man looks at the outward appearance, God sees the heart of every man. For example, God saw the heart of David while his father Jesse and his brothers saw only his outward appearance. God made Esther into a great queen who eventually had great influence in the kingdom of the Persian Empire.
Look at Joseph in the Old Testament. After he had suffered many things, God promoted him to greatness by making him the second ruler in all of Egypt. God is always seeing the heart of people and one of the reasons God promoted all these persons was because there was a measure of humility in them.

For me to become great in the kingdom of God I have to live a life of humility. The Word of God says, "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and He shall lift you up" (Js. 4:10 KJV). God hates pride. If I am proud in the sight of God, the Lord will reject me. The Word of God says also, "But He giveth more grace. Wherefore He saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble" (Js. 4:6 KJV). "And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted" (Mt. 23:12 KJV). How must I practice humility? By becoming like a little child! The Word of God says, "At that time came the disciples unto Jesus saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto Him and set him in the midst of them and said, Verily I say unto you, except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven" (Mt. 18:1-4 KJV). The world may think that being humble is stupid, but this is what pleases the heart of God. Jesus the King of glory came to earth in a humble fashion by being born in a manger. This shows to the world that God respects humility and this is what leads me to my next reason.

For me to become great in the kingdom of God I have to become a servant unto others. Jesus, the King of all Kings said these words about Himself, "I come not to be served, but as one who serves." Jesus set an example by washing His disciples' feet. One day, after the death of Jesus, while the disciples were out fishing, Jesus called to them from the shores. When they came to Him He served them by giving them fish and bread to eat. Have you ever asked yourself this question, "Who was it that prepared the meal Jesus gave to the disciples to eat?" It could be no other than Jesus Himself. Do you want to be great in the kingdom of heaven? For you to be great in the kingdom of heaven you must first become the servant of all. Unlike in the world, in the kingdom of God servants are given privileged positions. "But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant," says Jesus. And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And he said unto them, "The kings of the gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that serve. For weather is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? Is not he that sitteth at meat? But I am among you as he that serveth" (Lk. 22:24-27 KJV).
Another way I will become great in the kingdom is by walking in gentleness. David says in the Word of God, "and thy gentleness hath made me great" (2 Sam. 22:36 KJV). To be gentle means that I must be mild, calm, kind, tender, moderate, placid and temperate. David, though a man of war was also a man of gentleness. Many times he could have done Saul harm but he refused to do so. Anyone who spoke an unkind word against Saul, David would rebuke them by saying, "Touch not the Lord's anointed." Gentleness is one of the characters or fruit of the Holy Spirit. While on earth, Jesus demonstrated gentleness while ministering to the people. Since I would like to be great in the kingdom of heaven, I must learn to be gentle toward others.
