Prophetic Dreams from God

by Mike Wong

When we speak of divine revelations, the most common forms may be dreams and visions. We know that God still speaks today and dream is one way He sends His messages. Of course, not all dreams carry divine information. In fact most of them are induced by frequent day time stimulations and mental activities. As it says in Ecclesiastes, dreams come through busyness. People also experience dreams that are related to body senses during sleep. Like what you probably have experienced, dreams of toilet because you had nature call.

Not all dreams are from God, worse still some are from evil spirits. In Deuteronomy chapter 13 we clearly see dreams of this nature. If a dreamer gives people some sort of signs and it came to pass. But then he uses the opportunity to promote idol worship. This man must be stoned to death. Obviously, the dream was not from God but from evil spirits. There are often temptations to lead people to perish. We must be watchful enough to discern and resist them.

It is biblical that God speaks with dreams and visions. Examples from both the Old Testament and the New Testament clearly illustrate the fact. King Solomon dreamed that God were there to give him anything he asked for. He then asked for wisdom to manage the nation. God was well pleased and gave him unprecedented prosperity. In the book of revelations, a large part of the visions may have come from Apostle John's dream.

Why does God speak through dreams? The only thing we are sure is that He does it out of His loving kindness and His good wills. In the bible, we see dreams that are so influential that it affected the whole nation and hence the generations to come. After the Holy Spirit inspired 66 books were canonized, we see no more dreams like that. Divine dreams are for the good of personal growth and the salvation of souls. We saw examples where people who live in countries that are not reached by missionaries met Jesus in dreams and became Christians. It is important that no one should seek for revelational dreams because none of the dreamers in the Bible asked for it. Holy Spirit would give revelation in His own will.

God is kind and His love endures forever. Some dreams reveal his plan for the move of the Spirit. In the age we live in, God is going to do big things. He would never do anything without revealing to His servants. And one of the ways He would use is dreams. They stop people from sinning and make them turn back to Him and avoid judgment.

It is more important for believers to focus of the truth taught in the Bible than to seek personal experiences. Experiences and feelings are not reliable. What does not change forever is truth. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. All revelations must be tested with the overall principle concluded in scripture.
