This article addresses the question most of us face" Why our prayers are not answered ?"and tries to allay the fear that God is not listening.I came across this question while going through an issue of Matruvani a magazine dedicated to the teachings of Mata Amritandayami (Spiritual guru to millions of people from India and abroad). Surely most of us would have faced this question at some juncture of our life. The answer was illustrated through a short story.
I quote "Once there was a drought in an area .The people living there went to see a great sage and asked him "Why is God not sending us rain? Doesn’t He know we need it?" Without saying anything the sage got up immediately and walked away. Curious everyone followed him .The sage walked on until he came across a woman sitting with a small baby in her lap .The baby was bawling away .The sage went over to the woman and said in a loud voice, "How can you be so lazy? Why don’t you feed the child?"
Indignantly the lady replied, "Don’t you know that I am this child’s mother. He is my very flesh and blood. Don’t I know his needs better than you? I know when what and how to give him what he needs."
The sage then turned around and told the people who had followed him, "God is both your Mother and Father. He cares for you more than this lady does for her child. Just keep praying with this attitude and see the difference. Enlightened by the sage’s advice the people continued praying with this attitude and needless to say the people’s prayers were answered.
Therefore, henceforth when we pray let us pray with this total faith, with this understanding surrendering ourselves completely in his safe hands and see the difference it makes in our lives. Let us not demand what we want but pray to be given what we need let us believe in the compassion and intellect of the all-encompassing nature of the divine.
