Tips on Preparing a Better Sermon

The first key in preparing a sermon is to pray. This is most important, yet most often neglected. We cannot hope to achieve success without guidance from our Father. Sure we may be able to produce an acceptable exposition, but that is merely relying on our own strength.

Prov 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Another common pitfall is not relying enough on the Word. As we gain experience preparing sermons and speaking, the content that we use sometimes gravitate more towards our own experiences, rather than the principles expounded upon in the bible. This may be shocking to some of you, but go back to the last two or three sermons that you have done. Just how much do we actually refer back to the double edged sword that is the Word? Do not be too proud as to assume that your experiences are enough to feed His sheep; let them feed on the real Bread of Life.

It is also important to establish a single theme, with the emphasis being on the singular. Many times our sermons become a sweeping array of ideas and emotions that attempts to address multiple issues and multiple concepts, leaving our congregation a sea of muddled faces. Even if time is not a constraint, we should stick to a common theme, so that the message will be deeply ingrained.

Also, do not forget the experiences of those that came before us. There are many examples of great sermons out there that we can learn from. However, do not forget where from our chief inspiration comes from!
