There are many verses in the Bible telling us what God considers a sin. Most of the verses give a list of sins, listing some sins many times through out the Bible. While other lists describe sins that only show up in the Bible a few times. Regardless, the Word of God clearly tells us what sin is if we look and as Christians trying to be more like Christ, we need to know what God calls a sin. Then through the power given to us through the Holy Spirit, we need to be making a conscious decision each day to turn from sin.
Since these sins are scattered throughout the Bible, I felt it would be helpful if I organized them in one list. So as I went through these verses, I noticed that some sins were mentioned more often than others, making me believe they were more serious in nature or possibly more difficult to over come. Then there were other sins listed that just did not sound that bad, but they are in the bible, so we need to pay attention. In the list below, I put them in the order of which ones were mentioned most often.
Here is my summary of the sins listed in the Bible, followed by just a few of the verses were they came from. Sexual immorality, impurity, orgies, adultery, homosexuality, drunkenness, greed, lovers of money, filthy language, obscenity, hatred, malice, slander, malicious talk, gossip, anger, rage, selfish ambition, lust, pride, lovers of self, arrogance, no self control, conceited, lovers of controversy, envy, jealousy, believing godliness is a means to financial gain, course joking, disobedient to parents, false teaching and leading astray the children of God, lovers of pleasure, and unforgiving people.
Partial list of references:
Galatians 5:19-21, 1Corinthians 6:9-10, 1Corinthians 5:11, Colossians 3:5-8, 1 Timothy 6:3-5, James 3:14-15, James 4:6, Proverbs 3:34, 1 Peter 2:1, Titus 3:3, Ephesians 5:3-5, Romans 1:26-27, Romans 1:29-30, Hebrews 13:4, Matthew 15:19, 2 Timothy 3:2-5.
As you read through this summary of sins, you might think I am some type of far-right Christian fanatic who is trying to take all the fun out of life. However, please remember this is directly from the Bible, not from me. One other thing that is even more important to remember is that we will not get to heaven on our actions, but on the saving grace of our Lord who sent His son to die on the cross. However, we cannot turn our backs on what is taught in the Bible and we cannot pick and choose which part of the Bible we are going to follow. Either we accept it as the Word of God in its entirety or reject it as a nice book to try to live by. We are given power over sin, must know what sin is and pray for the strength to resist it in order to follow in His footsteps.
Now if you carefully go through this list of sins, it is very easy to see these traits or sins in other people we come in contact with. However, avoid associating them with other people, but instead look inwardly at how often you participate in these traits. The Bible was written to help you change your life, not to justify your actions or to condemn others with sin different than your own.
