What Makes the B ook o f Revelation So HARD to Understand?

It is true that most people, including Christians, find the Bible's Book of Revelation intriguing, but quite difficult to comprehend. For over 50 years as a church pastor, I have heard people say something like, "I read the Book of Revelation, but I couldn't make heads or tails out of it." Or, "I don't comprehend the Greek language and Revelation is all Greek to me." Is is usually said with a sort of sad resignation.

I had a pastor friend years ago, who informed me he was going to begin a series of message through the Book of Revelation and he know that was my favorite prophetic book of the Bible. Several weeks after he informed me of his intention, I talked to him on the phone. After the usual chit-chat I asked him how he was doing with the prophetic series. He replied, "You mean my pathetic series?" He went on to explain, he had gotten lost in all the signs and symbols in Revelation and had lost his way. Years later, however, when he had had an opportunity to study prophecy more intensely, he was able to make sense of it himself and explain it to others as well.

This is just one of many examples I have heard over the years from pastors, evangelists, missionaries, Sunday School teachers and common, every day Christians, with regard to understanding the Bible's greatest prophetic Book. Why is so hard to interpret? Primarily, because all too many ordinary Christians receive very little teaching on the Book and in the Book. And also, because those who do the preaching or the teaching are not that familiar with the meaning of the Book themselves. This is not a criticism, merely a fact.

A good way to learn more about the Book and becoming familiar with its teaching, is be reading its 22 chapters. It doesn't take that long. You may want to get in your hands a book written by a well-know author to guide you in your study. When I say read it, I do not mean, read it just one time through. I mean, read it over and over again and ask the Holy Spirit to help your understanding. Ask a pastor or perhaps, a more experienced or mature Christian, who you respect for any books or study guides they have used or are familiar with. Get all the gook teaching you can and keep on reading the book, and study it a chapter at a time. Get a notated Bible like the Schofield Reference Bible or Thompson Chain Reference Bible. It will help you along the way.

As you study, you will soon grow in your knowledge and understanding of the Book. Don't give up until you have a good grasp of it clear message. God promises a special blessing if you read and heed the Book of Revelation.
