Clowning in Church in Great Britain

In church, the parishioners are sure to be serious and subdued. The business of communicating with God is a very sober thing. There will be singing, and there will be preaching. There will even be fiery oratories. One thing that's not going to be there is a clown. There is never a clown in a church.

That is until the first Sunday of February in Dalston, East London. Every year, clowns from all over the world, regardless of their belief and denomination, flock to the Holy Trinity Church in Dalston in Great Britain. The clowns would come in full costume, usually wearing their most special clown costumes for this occasion. This is where they meet clowns from all over the world and perform for them and with them.

These clowns flock to the Holy Trinity Church to attend a church service in memory of Joseph Grimaldi. Joseph Grimaldi is the best known clown in all of England, the patron saint of clowns, if you would. It is said that Joseph Grimaldi elevated the stature of a clown from being just a fool or an obnoxious character into a character in popular theaters.

After the mass, the attending clowns would perform for the general public. Usually, there will be a place the clowns will go to after the mass where they can entertain the public. As with other festivals, the place will be decorated gaily, and the ever present British flag will be displayed. This has been going on since 1946.

Every time, the church will be surrounded by people, and media will be covering the event. The Grimaldi memorial service is remembered as a day of fun, laughter and clowns.
