On the last and greatest day of the feast of Tabernacles, Our Lord Jesus Christ stood and shouted with a loud voice,” If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him”.” By this, He meant the Holy Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive. Up to that time, the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified”-John 7v37-39.
With His resurrection as shown in Matthew 28v1-10,Jesus Christ was glorified. Thereafter, it was necessary to fulfill His promise. Before the fulfillment, He reconfirmed His promise in Acts 1v5 when He gave them the post-resurrection command, thus,”Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my father promised which, you have heard me speak about.(Remember John 7v37-39,14v16-17,26;15v26;16v1-13).”For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
What is the purpose of the Holy Spirit Baptism? The Lord answered this particular question by Himself when He said in Acts 1v8 that,” But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you: and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth”.
As the father had sent the Lord Jesus, so sent He us. This means that we believers too are to be baptized in the Holy Spirit in order to be very effective for Him. He sent us on a Great Commission to, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the NAME of the fatXher and of the son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey every thing I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age”-Matthew 28v19-20.
Remember, all authority in heaven and on earth has been given unto Him( Matthew 28v18) so He has commissioned us to go to the earth and witness for Him with power, but before you can successfully and effectively witness for Him with power, you have must “wait patiently in Jerusalem” to receive the Holy Spirit and the promised power to effectively win souls for the Lord.
Contemporary Christians are generally in a haste to witness for the Lord. That is why they are not effective for him. This means that they know Jesus Christ (by reading their Bibles diligently and going to Theological Colleges and Institutions) but do not know the Holy Spirit (which can only be received by waiting patently in absolute faith on the Lord so that the promised power can be fulfilled.)
