Because God is infinite and eternal, every attribute of his is to the infinite degree. He is absolutely and totally just, merciful, loving, (his love is infinitely high wide and deep). His holiness, when his kingdom finally comes, will not tolerate the most infintesimal sin because it is contrary to His nature, but if He did allow it, the ripple effect of it would eventually destroy the entire universe. When we finally join Him in His kingdom at the end of the age, He will cause us to "be holy as He is holy". Everything that we as free will agents do, say or think will be in total harmony with everything else that's going on because in Him we will truly "live, move and have our being". Meanwhile, as we live in this fallen world, we must "work out our salvation with fear and trembling", which is to progressively realign our body and soul with our "reborn" spirit which is in harmony with him. Gods purpose in creating us was to have an intimate, loving relationship with us; hence we are refered to as the "bride of Christ". How do you become intimate with someone but by getting to know them better. He knows us intimately and infinitely better than we know ourselves, but we are lacking in our knowledge of Him because of our association and identity with this fallen world. God, however, knows that we are "but dust" and has provided many temporal things to illustrate infinite and eternal truths. When the doctrine of the "Trinity" is brought up, which is to say that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are separate entities and yet there is one God, it is usually met with "we can't really understand it but we just accept it by faith". This attitude regarding any doctrinal truth is a good and necessary first step in our journey towards intimacy with our creator, but He does desire for us to have an ever deepening understanding of all that concerns Him.
What did God mean when He said in the beginning of Genesis "Let Us make man in Our image"? Also, what did Jesus mean when He said "I and the Father are one"? Aren't the 2 statements incompatable? What is meant by "oneness"? Let's look at our biblical temporal example: " and a man shall leave his mother and father and shall cleave unto his wife and they 2 shall become one". Anyone who is married has at least a vague concept of what this means, especially during love making, and ideally when the pleasure of ones partner is more the focus than ones own. There can be a merging of 2 souls where the identity of each can get lost in the other. This is the ideal that God intended, but because of our self-centeredness is probably rarely achieved by many. We at least, however, have a picture, and if we deeply contemplate the infinite nature of God, each member of the Trinity is immersed in the love of the other to the Nth degree, such that the thoughts, intents and purposes are merged with no hint of dissension. The Father glorifies the Son and the Son glorifies the Father. God is love and love, by its very nature, needs an object to love in order to exist. If God is not triunly loving Himself, He cannot be self existent.
